MARLOES DER KINDEREN

I took pictures and filmed my father in our house the day he was packing to move into an apartment because of my mother's health problems.
For my father, the parting was emotional because he lived in this house from early childhood until he was 84. However, in the video, although I asked him many questions about memories he had about our family at home, in his answers he only spoke about his mother, who died during the war when he was 16 or 17 years old. The house was so linked to his mother that the memories of us, the family, were only outside the house, our vacations by the sea.

Trying to capture his emotion I made this photo just after he took off his sweater.

As often in my work nothing is what it looks like but for me it represents how he felt that day inside.

This foto of my father against this background shows how deeply entwined he was with the house where I grew up and he lived in from early adolescence and where he had lost far too early his mother who died of cancer during the war. The memories of his mother were so much stronger than the memories of our own family's daily life in the house.

The shape of his hair and the shape of the top of the cabinet that always stood there, the crease in his trousers and the crease in the wallpaper, the geometric shapes in his shirt and wallpaper, his face stained with age, the ravages of time, like the bad painted wall and spotted linoleum floor. His shadow, strongly reminiscent of the shape of a woman in a long dress, his mother?
